Why Your Best Mate Might Be Your Best Medicine: Celebrating M8D8 2026
If you’ve lived in WA for any length of time, you know that mateship isn't just a word we throw around to sound "true blue"—it’s the literal glue that holds our communities together. Whether it’s a weekend trip down south to Margaret River, a casual kick-about at the local oval, or just sitting on a tailgate spinning yarns, the bonds between guys in Perth and regional WA are legendary.
But there’s a side to mateship we don’t always talk about: the "tough stuff." The moments when life gets messy, when the pressure of work or study feels like too much, or when someone just isn’t acting like themselves.
That’s where M8D8 (pronounced "Mate-Date") comes in.
Now in its sixth year, the M8D8 campaign by Youth Focus is making waves across Western Australia, especially in the Peel and South-West regions. It’s a movement designed by young men, for young men, with one simple but life-changing goal: to celebrate the friendships that help us get through the hard times.
The Power of Showing Up
We’ve all been there. You’re hanging out with a mate and you get that gut feeling that something’s a bit off. Maybe they’re quieter than usual, or maybe they’re suddenly "too busy" to head out. In the past, the Aussie way might have been to "she’ll be right" it into oblivion. But M8D8 is changing the narrative.
Take Charlie, for example. He’s a first-year apprentice at Alcoa and one of the faces of the 2026 campaign. For Charlie, his mates are his lifeline. As he puts it, friends help his mental health just by "doing what they do best—keeping me entertained, taking me out, and giving me cool things to do."
But Charlie also knows that when the chips are down, silence is the enemy. "I’ve been through tough times, and I like to talk to them because even though it can be hard, talking to someone does make it better," Charlie says. "I don’t want anyone to stay silent with it; staying silent is just not good."
It’s a powerful message. Sometimes, we think we need to have all the answers or be a qualified psychologist to help a mate. M8D8 reminds us that just showing up is often enough. You don’t have to fix the problem; you just have to be in the room (or the car, or the pub) while they’re going through it.
Born from Resilience
M8D8 didn’t just pop out of a marketing brainstorm in a Perth office. It was born in 2021 out of necessity and community resilience. Developed in collaboration with young men in the Peel region, the campaign was a direct response to the high rates of suicide among young men in the area.
The guys who helped build this campaign wanted something that felt authentic. They didn't want clinical talk or finger-wagging; they wanted a platform that looked and felt like their real lives.
Mark Barrett-Lennard, the Youth Focus Regional Manager for Peel & South-West, has seen firsthand how vital these peer-to-peer connections are. He points out that the transition from high school to early adulthood is often "messy, confusing, and lonely." Your parents might not "get it," and a professional might feel too formal, but your mates? They’re right there in the trenches with you.
"The support a mate can give is different from the support a family member or professional can offer," Mark says. "These conversations have the power and potential to change the trajectory of a young man’s life."
More Than Just a Hashtag
The 2026 M8D8 campaign is bigger than ever, featuring a series of raw, honest videos where local guys share their perspectives on mental health. You won't find scripted actors here—just real people talking about why their mates matter.
One of the coolest tools to come out of the campaign is the M8D8 Conversation Cards. Let’s be real: sometimes starting a deep conversation is awkward. "How are you?" often just gets a "Yeah, good." These cards (available digitally or as a physical pack) give you 16 different prompts to break the ice and get past the surface-level small talk.
Whether you’re a tradie on a job site, a uni student, or just a guy who cares about his circle, these cards are a game-changer for normalising the "real" talk.
Industry Stepping Up
It’s not just the individuals making a difference; it’s the companies that employ them. Alcoa has been a major supporter of M8D8 since the very beginning. As a major employer in the Peel and South West, they recognise that their young apprentices and tradespeople often face unique pressures—regional isolation, high-stress environments, and the weight of "man up" culture.
Liz Hodgson, Alcoa Australia’s Human Resources Director, highlights that mental health doesn't stop at the factory gate. By supporting M8D8, they are encouraging their staff to look out for one another. It’s about building a culture where checking in on a mate is just as important as wearing your PPE.
How Can You Get Involved?
The beauty of M8D8 is that it’s easy to get behind. You don’t need to sign up for a marathon (though Youth Focus does great work there too with the Hawaiian Ride for Youth!). Here is how you can support the movement:
- Follow the Journey: Check out @m8d8_wa on Instagram. It’s filled with videos and stories from young West Aussies that will make you realize you’re definitely not alone in whatever you’re feeling.
- Grab the Cards: Download the Conversation Cards from the Youth Focus website and keep them on your phone. Next time you’re grabbing a coffee or a beer with a mate, try one out.
- Spread the Word: If you’re part of a footy club, a workplace, or a school, Youth Focus has posters, flyers, and social tiles you can use to show your support.
- Listen: If a mate does open up, you don't need to be a hero. Just listen. Let them know you've got their back.
The Bottom Line
Perth is a city of "big-small town" energy. We look after our own. M8D8 is simply a reminder to keep doing what we do best, but with a bit more intention.
As Charlie says, "Showing up for your mates is very important... Even if you don’t know how to fix it, just trying to be there for them is good enough."
So, this week, reach out to that one mate you haven't heard from in a while. Organize a "Mate-Date." It might seem like a small gesture to you, but to them, it could mean the world.
